A Pharmacist–Physician Antibiotic Support Team

Abstract

A pharmacist–physician Antibiotic Support Team (AST) was designed and implemented to decrease overall costs and improve patient care by modifying antimicrobial regimens. During the pilot study program (from March to November 2000), 953 interventions were implemented with an overall estimated cost savings of $124,480. A pharmacist–physician team had a significant impact on economic outcomes. As a result, the P&T committee approved several pharmacistinitiated programs.
