  • A key is presented for the 22 known species of Didymodon (Musci) in North America north of Mexico, with taxonomic commentaries for each. A phylogram combining PCA ordination and a cladogram shows evident morphological convergence between five pairs of species. Six species are interpreted as surviving ancestors. Phylogenetic analysis is an assumption-laden and belief-oriented attempt at reconstructing a past unique conditional chain of events.
