We investigate the conditions under which parallel-propagating Alfv?n/ion-cyclotron waves are driven unstable by an isotropic (T ?? = T ??) population of alpha particles drifting parallel to the magnetic field at an average speed U ? with respect to the protons. We derive an approximate analytic condition for the minimum value of U ? needed to excite this instability and refine this result using numerical solutions to the hot-plasma dispersion relation. When the alpha-particle number density is…

INSTABILITIES DRIVEN BY THE DRIFT AND TEMPERATURE ANISOTROPY OF ALPHA PARTICLES IN THE SOLAR WIND
We investigate the conditions under which parallel-propagating Alfven/ion-cyclotron (A/IC) waves and fast-magnetosonic/whistler (FM/W) waves are driven unstable by the differential flow and
Electromagnetic instabilities of low-beta alpha/proton beams in space plasmas
Relative drifts between different species or particle populations are characteristic to solar plasma outflows, e.g., in the fast streams of the solar winds, coronal mass ejections and interplanetary
Ion Heating Resulting from the Deceleration of Alpha Particles by a Proton-alpha Drift Instability in a Nonuniform Solar-wind Plasma
The deceleration of alpha particle observed in the fast solar wind can contribute to the plasma heating between 0.3 and 1 au. The observational data suggest that the energy released from the
ENSEMBLE SIMULATIONS OF PROTON HEATING IN THE SOLAR WIND VIA TURBULENCE AND ION CYCLOTRON RESONANCE
Protons in the solar corona and heliosphere exhibit anisotropic velocity distributions, violation of magnetic moment conservation, and a general lack of thermal equilibrium with the other particle
Cyclotron instabilities driven by temperature anisotropy in the solar wind
Kinetic plasma instabilities are important for regulating the temperature anisotropies of electrons and ions in solar wind. For the low beta regime, it is known that electromagnetic ion/electron
Fire Hose instability driven by alpha particle temperature anisotropy
We investigate properties of a solar wind-like plasma including a secondary alpha particle population exhibiting a parallel temperature anisotropy with respect to the background magnetic field, using
Particle-in-cell Simulations of Continuously Driven Mirror and Ion Cyclotron Instabilities in High Beta Astrophysical and Heliospheric Plasmas
We use particle-in-cell simulations to study the nonlinear evolution of ion velocity space instabilities in an idealized problem in which a background velocity shear continuously amplifies the
Relative drifts and temperature anisotropies of protons and α particles in the expanding solar wind: 2.5D hybrid simulations
Context. We perform 2.5D hybrid simulations to investigate the origin and evolution of relative drift speeds between protons and α particles in the collisionless turbulent low- ˜ β solar wind plasma.
Magnetohydrodynamic Slow Mode with Drifting He$^{++}$: Implications for Coronal Seismology and the Solar Wind
The MHD slow mode wave has application to coronal seismology, MHD turbulence, and the solar wind where it can be produced by parametric instabilities. We consider analytically how a drifting ion

Wave heating and acceleration of solar wind ions by cyclotron resonance
In order to explain the ion temperature anisotropies and differential speeds, as observed in solar wind high-speed streams, a fluid type model is presented that takes into account ion heating and
Alfven Wave Turbulence and Perpendicular Ion Temperatures in Coronal Holes
Low-frequency Alfven-wave turbulence causes ion trajectories to become chaotic, or "stochastic," when the turbulence amplitude is sufficiently large. Stochastic orbits enable ions to absorb energy
