BACKGROUND Obligate intracellular bacteria of arthropods often exhibit a significant role in either human health or arthropod ecology. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS An obligate intracellular gamma-proteobacterium was isolated from the actively questing hard tick Ixodes ricinus using mammalian and amphibian cell lines.
