The fungal genus Ilyonectria consists of several pathogenic species that can infect plant roots. An invasive and devastating pathogenic fungi, Ilyonectria radicicola (synonym Cylindrocarpon destructans), is responsible for root rot in ginseng. A culture-based method has traditionally been used for detecting of I. radicicola in field soil, but the process is time-consuming and labor-intensive.
