A Novel Approach for Partial Fingerprint Identification to Mitigate MasterPrint Generation

title={A Novel Approach for Partial Fingerprint Identification to Mitigate MasterPrint Generation},
author={Mahesh Joshi and Bodhisatwa Mazumdar and Somnath Dey},
Partial fingerprint recognition is a method to recognize an individual when the sensor size has a small form factor in accepting a full fingerprint. It is also used in forensic research to identify the partial fingerprints collected from the crime scenes. But the distinguishing features in the partial fingerprint are relatively low due to small fingerprint captured by the sensor. Hence, the uniqueness of a partial fingerprint cannot be guaranteed, leading to a possibility that a single partial…

Utility of Quality Metrics in Partial Fingerprint Recognition

Experimental results in this research shows that NFIQ 2.0 and Gabor based method are good at detecting partial fingerprints by assigning them low quality values.

Directional filter bank-based fingerprint image quality

Ranked EER, ROC, and error-reject curves show that DFB-based method is a good predictor of matching performance, and it outperforms the existing fingerprint quality methods.

MasterPrint: Exploring the Vulnerability of Partial Fingerprint-Based Authentication Systems

This paper exposes a potential vulnerability of partial fingerprint-based authentication systems, especially when multiple impressions are enrolled per finger, and indicates that it is indeed possible to locate or generate partial fingerprints that can be used to impersonate a large number of users.

A scheme of preprocessing and feature extraction of fingerprint images for automatic identification is presented, which works even if the pattern class is unknown, and is found to be very good for practical application.

A cross-device matching fingerprint database from multi-type sensors

The FingerPass cross-device matching fingerprint database is created which consists of almost 80 thousand fingerprint images from 90 subjects on nine different fingerprint sensors and the Ver-iFinger fingerprint recognition algorithm is applied, and the experimental results indicate that the Finger pass is a challenge for fingerprint algorithms.

Combining match scores with liveness values in a fingerprint verification system

The goal of this work is to design a framework in which a liveness detector is incorporated with a fingerprint matcher, and introduces a Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) scheme that models the relationship between match scores and liveness values.

This paper first formulate the model of fingerprint ridge line segments and then apply a target tracking method to trace each of the ridge lines, and a feedback technique is adopted to correct the fingerprint directional image in each tracing step in order to improve tracing accuracy.

Algorithm for Detection and Elimination of False Minutiae in Fingerprint Images

This paper used orientation and flow of ridges as the key factor for postprocessing to avoid eliminating true minutiae while postprocessing and it is shown by the experiments that the postprocessing algorithm improves theminutiae extraction accuracy and the performance of the matching process.

Pattern Recognition

A Width-Independent Fast Thinning Algorithm

The procedure the authors propose allows one to speed up the thinning transformation, and to get a well-shaped skeleton, and the use of the proposed algorithm turns out to be more advantageous the greater the width of the figure to be thinned.
