ABSTRACT
A new rhamphorhynchid pterosaur species, Sericipterus wucaiwanensis, gen. et sp. nov., is described from the Upper Jurassic part of the Shishugou Formation in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region of northwest China. Pterosaurs from this unit are the earliest and only records of pterosaurs in the Jurassic of northwest China. The individual specimen is one of the largest known among ‘rhamphorhynchoids,’ or non-pterodactyloid pterosaurs. The holotype comprises an associated skeleton of mostly…

The postcranial skeleton of IVPP V 17959 has ontogenetically mature characteristics including a completely fused scapula and coracoid, fused proximal and distal carpal series, and an ossified extensor tendon process of the first wing phalanx, allowing its classification as ontogenetic stage five.

A pelvis-only phylogenetic analysis was constructed to test whether the pterosaur pelvis carries a useful phylogenetic signal, and several characters suggest that Vectidraco belongs to Azhdarchoidea, while the general phylogenetic composition of western European and Chinese communities appear to have been approximately similar.

Phylogenetic analysis of a new pterosaur from the Early Cretaceous of Liaoning Province of China and the Pterodactyloidea reveals that the characters of the elongate azhdarchid vertebrae appeared independently in both groups, demonstrating that the homoplastic character states present in these two taxa were acquired in a different order in their respective lineages.
