A New Approach of Linear Theory of Tearing Instability in Uniform Resistivity
@inproceedings{Shimizu2022ANA, title={A New Approach of Linear Theory of Tearing Instability in Uniform Resistivity}, author={Tohru Shimizu and Koji Kondoh}, year={2022} }
The linear perturbation equation of the tearing instability derived in LSC theory (Loureiro, Schekochihin, and Cowley (Loureiro, et.al. 2007)) is numerically examined as an initial value problem, where the inner and outer regions are seamlessly solved under uniform resistivity. Hence, all regions are solved as the resistive MHD (magnetohydrodynamics). To comprehensively study physically acceptable perturbation solutions, the behaviors of the local maximum points required for physically…

Numerical MHD study for plasmoid instability in uniform resistivity
- Physics
- 2017
The plasmoid instability (PI) caused in uniform resistivity is numerically studied with a MHD numerical code of HLLD scheme. It is shown that the PI observed in numerical studies may often include…
The ideal tearing mode: theory and resistive MHD simulations
- Physics
- 2016
Classical MHD reconnection theories, both the stationary Sweet-Parker model and the tearing instability, are known to provide rates which are too slow to explain the observations. However, a recent…
THE TEARING MODE INSTABILITY OF THIN CURRENT SHEETS: THE TRANSITION TO FAST RECONNECTION IN THE PRESENCE OF VISCOSITY
- Physics
- 2014
This paper studies the growth rate of reconnection instabilities in thin current sheets in the presence of both resistivity and viscosity. In a previous paper, Pucci & Velli, it was argued that at…
Effect of nonuniform resistivity in Petschek reconnection
- Physics, Geology
- 2006
The controversial topic of the existence of a Petschek solution in steady-state magnetic reconnection for a uniform resistivity is investigated, by using two-dimensional time-dependent…
Effect of plasma-β on the onset of plasmoid instability in Sweet–Parker current sheets
- PhysicsJournal of Plasma Physics
- 2014
Abstract A numerical study of magnetic reconnection in two-dimensional resistive magnetohydrodynamics for Sweet–Parker current sheets that are subject to plasmoid instability is carried out. The…
Marginal Stability of Sweet–Parker Type Current Sheets at Low Lundquist Numbers
- Physics
- 2018
Magnetohydrodynamic simulations have shown that a nonunique critical Lundquist number Sc exists, hovering around Sc ∼ 104, above which threshold Sweet–Parker type stationary reconnecting…
Fast Magnetic Reconnection: Secondary Tearing Instability and Role of the Hall Term
- PhysicsThe Astrophysical Journal
- 2019
Magnetic reconnection provides the primary source for explosive energy release, plasma heating, and particle acceleration in many astrophysical environments. The last years witnessed a revival of…
Reduced magnetohydrodynamic theory of oblique plasmoid instabilities
- Physics
- 2011
The three-dimensional nature of plasmoid instabilities is studied using the reduced magnetohydrodynamic equations. For a Harris equilibrium with guide field, represented by Bo=Bpotanh(x/λ)y+Bzoz, a…
Magnetic Reconnection via Current Sheets

A general picture of magnetic reconnection in the framework of 2‐D incompressible resistive magnetohydrodynamic theory is presented. Numerical studies of (quasi‐) steady‐state driven reconnection…
Magnetic reconnection with anomalous resistivity in two-and-a-half dimensions. I. Quasistationary case
- Physics
- 2005
In this paper quasistationary, “two-and-a-half-dimensional” magnetic reconnection is studied in the framework of incompressible resistive magnetohydrodynamics. A new theoretical approach for the…
