Few galaxies have been observed within the so-called “zone of avoidance” created by the dust clouds in the disk of the Milky Way. Two notable exceptions are the elliptical and spiral galaxies Maffei 1 & 2, which were serendipitously discovered on near infrared plates in 1968. Indeed, since dust extinction at K band is about 1/10th that of V band, NIR observations can be a powerful tool for studying the morphology of obscured galaxies at low Galactic latitudes.
