Syncuaria mycteriae n. sp. (Nematoda: Acuarioidea) was collected under the lining of the gizzard of a wood stork, Mycteria americana L., from the Area de Conservacion Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The new species can be distinguished from all known species of Syncuaria by having irregular dotted ornamentations on the caudal alae of males, a complex distal end of the left spicule comprising 3 protuberances, and a spicule ratio of 1:9.3. Preliminary phylogenetic analysis of 11 Syncuaria spp. based on 9…

A new acuariid nematode, Syncuaria mackoi n. sp. (Spirurida), from Ciconia nigra (L.) (Ciconiiformes: Ciconiidae) in Europe

A pair of small cupolae situated dorsally and ventrally between bases of cordons of the new species is described for the first time in this genus; they are recognised as homologous to the pair of spines in the same position previously described in S. ciconiae.

Primeiro registro de Syncuaria squamata (Linstow) (Nematoda, Acuariidae) em biguás, Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Gmelin) (Aves, Phalacrocoracidae) no Brasil

The known geographical distribution of nematodes of the genus Syncuaria to Brazil is extended and two new species are identified, one of which is S. squamata.

Redescription, generic allocation and synonymy of Decorataria magnilabiata (Molin, 1860) n. comb. (Nematoda: Spirurida: Acuariidae), a parasite of the roseate spoonbill Platalea ajaja L. (Aves: Threskiornithidae) in South America

Decorataria magnilabiata (Molin, 1860) n. comb. is proposed for Dispharagus magnilabiatus Molin, 1860 [= Acuaria (Cheilospirura) magnilabiata (Molin, 1860) Railliet, Henry & Sisoff, 1912;

A Helminthological Survey on Tancho, Grus japonensis, in Hokkaido, Japan

Since the acuariid nematodes including the genera Paracuaria, Syncuaria and Viktorocara are known to cause ulcerative ventriculitis and/or enteritis in bird alimentary tracts, monitoring of helminths is recommended in this endangered crane species.

Addendum to the checklist of the helminth parasites of vertebrates in Costa Rica.

An addendum to the "Checklist of the helminth parasites of vertebrates in Costa Rica" with a parasite-host list as well as a host-parasite list is presented, adding 33 records, representing 23 species.

Redescription of Decorataria decorata (Spirurida, Acuariidae) based on nematodes from Podiceps cristatus and P. grisegena (Aves, Podicipediformes) from Bulgaria

The light-microscopy and SEM observations on specimens collected from the stomach of Podiceps cristatus and P. grisegena revealed the presence of a porebearing field on each pseudolabium and a pair of spines situated between bases of the cordons.

Evaluation of Some Vulval Appendages in Nematode Taxonomy

Abstract A survey of the nature and phylogenetic distribution of nematode vulval appendages revealed 3 major classes based on composition, position, and orientation that included membranes, flaps,

The Nature of Diversity: An Evolutionary Voyage of Discovery

It is argued that it is impossible to comprehend the nature of life on earth unless evolution - the history of organisms - is restored to a central position in research and how the phylogenetic approach can be integrated with ecological and behavioral studies to produce a richer and more complete picture of evolution.
