Cornufer dorsalis Dumeril, a frog described from Java, was identified by Boulenger (1882, p. 108) with a Fijian species. Barbour (1923) makes the same identifications, but neither he nor Boulenger saw the type specimen. Van Kampen (1923, p. 239) examined Dumeril's type of dorsalis in Paris and placed it as a member of the genus or subgenus Platymantis, which some authors unite with Rana. Van Kampen points out that the locality "Java" is certainly incorrect, as, indeed, Boulenger had suspected…Â

Both new species belong among those Platymantis in which the finger and toe discs are markedly enlarged, and may be closely related to P. neckeri of Bougainville, Solomon Islands.
