Background:Comorbidity measures are necessary to describe patient populations and adjust for confounding. In direct comparisons, studies have found the Elixhauser comorbidity system to be statistically slightly superior to the Charlson comorbidity system at adjusting for comorbidity. However, the Elixhauser classification system requires 30 binary variables, making its use for reporting and analysis of comorbidity cumbersome. Objective:Modify the Elixhauser classification system into a single…
A modified Elixhauser score for predicting in-hospital mortality in internal medicine admissions.
Identifying Increased Risk of Readmission and In-hospital Mortality Using Hospital Administrative Data: The AHRQ Elixhauser Comorbidity Index
TLDR
These indices are effective methods to incorporate the influence of comorbid conditions in models designed to assess the risk of in-hospital mortality and readmission using administrative data with limited clinical information, especially when small samples sizes are an issue.
New Morbidity and Comorbidity Scores based on the Structure of the ICD-10
TLDR
The quality of the measures based on the structure of the ICD-10 was superior compared with the Charlson Index and the Elixhauser Comorbidities and may be used to control for confounding.
Comorbidity scores for administrative data benefited from adaptation to local coding and diagnostic practices.
comorbidity: An R package for computing comorbidity scores
Comorbidity scores are extensively used in observational medical research studies to avoid potential bias when the burden of disease could be confounding the association of interest. This is of
Comparing Charlson and Elixhauser comorbidity indices with different weightings to predict in-hospital mortality: an analysis of national inpatient data
TLDR
The newly derive weights support patient population-based analysis of in-hospital mortality and seek country or specific cohort-based weightings.
Why Summary Comorbidity Measures Such As the Charlson Comorbidity Index and Elixhauser Score Work
TLDR
A mathematical proof is devised that found that the comorbidity summary measures are appropriate prognostic or adjustment mechanisms in survival analyses and the theoretical justification that validates the use of such scores under many conditions is provided.
Homogeneous Group approach to Elixhauser comorbidity for hospital death using administrative data
TLDR
The authors' results support the hypothesis that comorbidity properly describes mortality in homogeneous groups of patients and could be condensed into one, uniform, single-number comorebidity scale that summarizes all of the patient's burden.
The Elixhauser Comorbidity Method Outperforms the Charlson Index in Predicting Inpatient Death After Orthopaedic Surgery
TLDR
Provider-specific outcomes, particularly inpatient mortality, may be evaluated differently depending on the comorbidity risk adjustment model selected, and future research assessing and comparing the performance of the Charlson and Elixhauser measures in predicting long-term outcomes would be of value.

Comparison of the Elixhauser and Charlson/Deyo Methods of Comorbidity Measurement in Administrative Data
TLDR
The Elixhauser comorbidity measurement method performs better than the widely used Charlson/Deyo method in the Canadian acute MI cases studied.
Comorbidity measures for use with administrative data.
TLDR
The present method addresses some of the limitations of previous measures and produces an expanded set of comorbidities that easily is applied without further refinement to administrative data for a wide range of diseases.
Comparison of the Performance of Two Comorbidity Measures, With and Without Information From Prior Hospitalizations
TLDR
This study compares the performance of two comorbidity risk adjustment methods in five groups of California hospital patients with common reasons for hospitalization, and assesses the contribution to model performance made by information drawn from prior hospital admissions.
A comparison of comorbidity measurements to predict healthcare expenditures.
TLDR
Simple count measurements appear to be better predictors of future expenditure than the comorbidity indices, with a count of diagnosis clusters being the single best predictor of future expenditures among the measurements examined.
Comparison of three comorbidity measures for predicting health service use in patients with osteoarthritis.
TLDR
The Rx-Risk-V and Elixhauser are suitable comorbidity measures for examining health services use among patients with OA because both indices are derived from administrative databases and can efficiently capture comorebidity among large patient populations.
Impact of Different Measures of Comorbid Disease on Predicted Mortality of Intensive Care Unit Patients
TLDR
Independently weighted comorbid conditions identified through computerized discharge abstracts can contribute significantly to ICU risk adjustment models.

TLDR

TLDR
Efforts to support improvement of hospital outcomes can take advantage of risk-adjustment methods based on automated physiology and diagnosis data that are not confounded by information obtained after hospital admission.
