Major changes occurred in the circulation as fast westerly flow and long wave spacing in February were replaced in March by meridional flow and short wave spacing. The greatest month-to-month change was in the east-central Pacific as 700-mb. heights increased by more than 700 ft. The strong ridge accompanying this change (figs. 1, 2) represents a retrogression of the principal ridge which had been near the west coast of North America in February [l].
