We develop and test a method for measuring the gravitational lensing induced distortion of faint background galaxies. We first describe how we locate the galaxies and measure a 2-component `polarisation' or ellipticity statistic $e_\alpha$ whose expectation value should be proportional to the gravitational shear $\gamma_\alpha$. We then show that an anisotropic instrumental psf perturbs the polarisation by $\delta e_\alpha = P^s_{\alpha\beta} p_\beta$, where $p_\alpha$ is a measure of the psf… Expand
The first shear measurements from precision weak lensing
We present an end-to-end methodology to measure the effects of weak lensing on individual galaxy-galaxy systems exploiting their kinematic information. Using this methodology, we have measured aExpand
Probing gravity with a joint analysis of galaxy and CMB lensing and SDSS spectroscopy
We present measurements of $E_G$, a probe of gravity from large-scale structure, using BOSS LOWZ and CMASS spectroscopic samples, with lensing measurements from SDSS (galaxy lensing) and Planck (CMBExpand
LoCuSS: the near-infrared luminosity and weak-lensing mass scaling relation of galaxy clusters
We present the first scaling relation between weak-lensing galaxy cluster mass, $M_{WL}$, and near-infrared luminosity, $L_K$. Our results are based on 17 clusters observed with wide-fieldExpand
The effective number density of galaxies for weak lensing measurements in the LSST project
Future weak lensing surveys potentially hold the highest statistical power for constraining cosmological parameters compared to other cosmological probes. The statistical power of a weak lensingExpand
Weak lensing peak count as a probe of f(R) theories
Weak gravitational lensing by galaxy clusters on faint higher redshift galaxies has been traditionally used to study the cluster mass distribution and as a tool to identify clusters as peaks in theExpand
Growing a "cosmic beast": observations and simulations of MACS J0717.5+3745
We present a gravitational lensing and X-ray analysis of a massive galaxy cluster and its surroundings. The core of MACS J0717.5+3745 (|$M(R\lt 1\, {\rm Mpc})\sim$| |$2 \times 10^{15}\, \, {\rmExpand
Joint Strong and Weak Lensing Analysis of the Massive Cluster Field J0850+3604
We present a combined strong and weak lensing analysis of the J085007.6+360428 (J0850) field, which was selected by its high projected concentration of luminous red galaxies and contains the massiveExpand
A first constraint on the average mass of ultra-diffuse galaxies from weak gravitational lensing
The recent discovery of thousands of ultra diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in nearby galaxy clusters has opened a new window into the process of galaxy formation and evolution. Several scenarios have beenExpand
An accurate and practical method for inference of weak gravitational lensing from galaxy images
We demonstrate highly accurate recovery of weak gravitational lensing shear using an implementation of the Bayesian Fourier Domain (BFD) method proposed by Bernstein & Armstrong (2014, BA14),Expand
LoCuSS: weak-lensing mass calibration of galaxy clusters
We present weak-lensing mass measurements of 50 X-ray luminous galaxy clusters at $0.15\le z\le0.3$, based on uniform high quality observations with Suprime-Cam mounted on the 8.2-m Subaru telescope.Expand
