We study a class of optimization problems of Mayer form, for the strictly hyperbolic nonlinear controlled system of conservation laws ut + [F(u)]x = h(t, x, u, z), where z = z(t, x) is the control variable. Introducing a family of «generalized cotangent vectors», we derive necessary conditions for a solution to be optimal, stated in the form of a Maximum Principle.
