To extend research linking pubertal timing and adolescent health outcomes, this study examines boys’ pubertal timing and subsequent interpersonal success and health behaviors in mid adulthood. Past research has shown that boys’ pubertal timing is associated with both positive and negative developmental outcomes in the short term, and so it is unclear how pubertal timing is consequential for adjustment across the long term. Data from 460 boys from the Terman Life-Cycle Study were examined over a…
Long-term consequences of pubertal timing for youth depression: Identifying personal and contextual pathways of risk
TLDR
Findings provide novel insight into multilevel processes accounting for sex differences in depression across the adolescent transition and identify several psychological, social–behavioral, and interpersonal pathways accounting for the contribution of pubertal timing to initial and enduring risk for depression in girls as well as emerging risk for Depression in boys.
Pubertal Timing and Substance Use in Middle Adolescence: A 2-Year Follow-up Study
TLDR
Early puberty is a risk factor for substance use particularly among boys and among girls, the impact of pubertal timing already tempers off during adolescence, and the associations persisted when symptom dimensions and parental monitoring were added into the models.
Pubertal timing and depressive symptoms in late adolescence: The moderating role of individual, peer, and parental factors
TLDR
Results indicate that the effect of pubertal timing on depressive symptoms must be conceptualized through complex interactions between characteristics of adolescents' interpersonal relationships and prepubertal vulnerabilities.
A Meta-Analytic Review of the Association Between Pubertal Timing and Psychopathology in Adolescence: Are There Sex Differences in Risk?
TLDR
A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed and PsycInfo databases and 101 articles met criteria for inclusion, and robust early pubertal timing effects emerged for both males and females across all domains of psychopathology that were small in magnitude.
Is pubertal timing associated with involvement in bullying in middle adolescence?
TLDR
Early maturation among boys was cross-sectionally associated with being a bully, and late maturation with exclusion from peer group, and after two years, the associations had disappeared.
Explaining the longitudinal association between puberty and depression: Sex differences in the mediating effects of peer stress
TLDR
Investigation of the interplay among physical, psychological, and social processes involved in the sex difference in adolescent depression investigated whether exposure to peer stress serves as one pathway through which pubertal development contributes to depression over time, differentially for girls and boys.
Timing pubertaire et adaptation psychosociale à l'adolescence : le rôle des relations interpersonnelles et des vulnérabilités individuelles
The objective of this dissertation was to evaluate the longitudinal links between pubertal timing and internalizing and externalizing problems during adolescence. Within a theoretical framework of
Understanding Disordered Eating in Black Adolescents: Effects of Gender Identity, Racial Identity, and Perceived Puberty
Gender identity has been identified as a risk factor for disordered eating behaviors (DEB) in adolescents. However, extant studies have been slow to consider the combined influence of multiple social

Pubertal Timing and Adolescent Adjustment and Behavior: Conclusions Vary by Rater
The effects of pubertal timing on adolescent development have been studied since the late 1930s, yet the research has yielded inconsistent findings. One reason for such inconsistency may be the
Is pubertal timing associated with psychopathology in young adulthood.
TLDR
Early maturing females are at unique risk of persistent difficulty during adolescence and should be targeted for preventive efforts and late maturation among males may be associated with a late-onset pathway for deviant behavior or substance abuse.
The Relation between Puberty and Psychological Distress in Adolescent Boys.
This longitudinal study examined the relation between puberty, as measured by both pubertal status and timing, and adjustment problems, as measured by externalized hostile feelings and internalized
Is psychopathology associated with the timing of pubertal development?
TLDR
Early-maturing girls had the poorest current and lifetime history of adjustment problems, indicating that this pattern of pubertal development merits attention by mental health providers and researchers.
Pubertal timing and substance use: associations between and within families across late adolescence.
TLDR
Between-family analyses of data from adolescent twin girls offer new evidence that early menarche is associated with earlier initiation and greater frequency of smoking and drinking, and replications demonstrated that the association of pubertal timing with substance use cannot be explained solely by between-family confounds.
Pubertal timing and grade effects on adjustment
TLDR
Although there were gender differences for some of the adjustment constructs, there were no gender by pubertal timing effects and the results are discussed in terms of the life-span developmental perspective.
Examining the relationship between pubertal stage, adolescent health behaviours and stress
TLDR
The results suggest that the onset of puberty has a marked effect on the development of health behaviours, except for exercise behaviour in boys, where advanced puberty was associated with more exercise.
Pubertal maturation and the development of behavioural and emotional problems in early adolescence
TLDR
It is concluded that pubertal development has small but significant effects on the development of problem behaviour in early adolescence.
