A Grammar of Perforated Masonry Walls. A formal analysis of brick walls used for shading and ventilation in Paraguay

  title={A Grammar of Perforated Masonry Walls. A formal analysis of brick walls used for shading and ventilation in Paraguay},
  author={Elena Vazquez},
This paper describes a grammar for Perforated Masonry Walls of contemporary Paraguayan brick architecture. In these walls, bricks are arranged to generate different patterns, utilizing a series of rules that define the formal relation between oblongs. The masonry walls selected for this study provide shade and natural ventilation, and are used to improve thermal comfort in buildings. The paper, first, presents an analytical study that extracts the underlying generative rules for pattern-making…

Unveiling the structure of the Marrakech Medina: A shape grammar and an interpreter for generating urban form

Research carried out to develop a parametric urban shape grammar for the Zaouiat Lakhdar quarter of the Medina of Marrakech in Morocco is described, to create the basis for a system that could capture some features of the existing urban fabric and apply them in contemporary urban planning and architectural design.

Visual-Physical Grammars

The results of this study demonstrate clearly the potentials for embedding visual properties in structural systems, and provide the foundations for further work on assembly systems for complete houses and other small-scale structures, and grammars to generate them.

Triangle and T-Square: The Windows of Frank Lloyd Wright

Various authors have attributed many of Frank Lloyd Wright's ideas regarding ornamentation to the advanced design theories which developed out of the eighteenth century enlightenment. However, it

A Study of Emergence in the Generation of Islamic Geometric Patterns

Generative design is concerned with the definition and exploration of design spaces, and it has been suggested that emergence plays a key role in this process. In this paper, the impact of emergence

Performance-Orientated Design Precursors and Potentials

Performance-oriented design is not without precedent. In the past, architecture responded with great sophistication and beauty to the need to preserve local resources and provide diverse and suitable

Shape: Talking about Seeing and Doing

The book takes the idea of design as calculation from mere heuristic or metaphor to a rigorous relationship in which design and calculation each inform and enhance the other.

Kindergarten Grammars: Designing with Froebel's Building Gifts

A constructive approach to the definition of languages of designs is outlined. Froebel's building gifts are used to illustrate the approach.
