In this survey article, we explain a few ideas behind the fermionic projector approach and summarize recent results which clarify the connection to quantum field theory. The fermionic projector is introduced, which describes the physical system by a collection of Dirac states, including the states of the Dirac sea. Formulating the interaction by an action principle for the fermionic projector, we obtain a consistent description of interacting quantum fields which reproduces the results of…
Perturbative quantum field theory in the framework of the fermionic projector
We give a microscopic derivation of perturbative quantum field theory, taking causal fermion systems and the framework of the fermionic projector as the starting point. The resulting quantum field
Causal Fermion Systems: A Quantum Space-Time Emerging From an Action Principle
Causal fermion systems are introduced as a general mathematical framework for formulating relativistic quantum theory. By specializing, we recover earlier notions like fermion systems in discrete
The Continuum Limit of a Fermion System Involving Neutrinos: Weak and Gravitational Interactions
We analyze the causal action principle for a system of relativistic fermions composed of massive Dirac particles and neutrinos. In the continuum limit, we obtain an effective interaction described by
Construction of the Pauli–Villars-Regulated Dirac Vacuum in Electromagnetic Fields
Using the Pauli–Villars regularization and arguments from convex analysis, we construct solutions to the classical time-independent Maxwell equations in Dirac’s vacuum, in the presence of small
The Fermionic Projector, entanglement and the collapse of the wave function
After a brief introduction to the fermionic projector approach, we review how entanglement and second quantized bosonic and fermionic fields can be described in this framework. The constructions are
Bosonic Loop Diagrams as Perturbative Solutions of the Classical Field Equations in ϕ4-Theory
Solutions of the classical ϕ4-theory in Minkowski space-time are analyzed in a perturbation expansion in the nonlinearity. Using the language of Feynman diagrams, the solution of the Cauchy problem
A Lorentzian Quantum Geometry
We propose a formulation of a Lorentzian quantum geometry based on the framework of causal fermion systems. After giving the general definition of causal fermion systems, we deduce space-time as a
"Vacuum-like" Hadamard states for quantum fields on curved spacetimes
We present a modification of the recently proposed Sorkin-Johnston states for scalar free quantum fields on a class of globally hyperbolic spacetimes possessing compact Cauchy hypersurfaces. The

The theory of causal fermion systems is a recent approach to fundamental physics. Giving quantum mechanics, general relativity and quantum field theory as limiting cases, it is a candidate for a
A Non-Perturbative Construction of the Fermionic Projector on Globally Hyperbolic Manifolds II - Space-Times of Infinite Lifetime
The previous functional analytic construction of the fermionic projector on globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds is extended to space-times of infinite lifetime. The construction is based on an

Minimization method for relativistic electrons in a mean-field approximation of quantum electrodynamics
We study a mean-field relativistic model which is able to describe both the behavior of finitely many spin-1/2 particles like electrons and of the Dirac sea which is self-consistently polarized in

The S Matrix in Quantum Electrodynamics
The covariant quantum electrodynamics of Tomonaga, Schwinger, and Feynman is used as the basis for a general treatment of scattering problems involving electrons, positrons, and photons. Scattering
The Fermionic Projector, entanglement and the collapse of the wave function
After a brief introduction to the fermionic projector approach, we review how entanglement and second quantized bosonic and fermionic fields can be described in this framework. The constructions are
Quantum Electrodynamics. I. A Covariant Formulation
Attempts to avoid the divergence difficulties of quantum electrodynamics by multilation of the theory have been uniformly unsuccessful. The lack of convergence does indicate that a revision of

Abstract:We study the energy of relativistic electrons and positrons interacting through the second quantized Coulomb interaction and a self-generated magnetic field. As states we allow generalized
THE CAUSAL PERTURBATION EXPANSION REVISITED: RESCALING THE INTERACTING DIRAC SEA
The causal perturbation expansion defines the Dirac sea in the presence of a time-dependent external field. It yields an operator whose image generalizes the vacuum solutions of negative energy and
Renormalization and Asymptotic Expansion of Dirac’s Polarized Vacuum
We perform rigorously the charge renormalization of the so-called reduced Bogoliubov-Dirac-Fock (rBDF) model. This nonlinear theory, based on the Dirac operator, describes atoms and molecules while
Existence of a Stable Polarized Vacuum in the Bogoliubov-Dirac-Fock Approximation
According to Dirac’s ideas, the vacuum consists of infinitely many virtual electrons which completely fill up the negative part of the spectrum of the free Dirac operator D0. In the presence of an
