This book was published to accompany the exhibition “A Forest of Signs: Art in the Crisis of Representation”, 7 May-13 August 1989, organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and curated by Mary Jane Jacob and Ann Goldstein. The exhibition featured the work of 30 artists. The oldest of the artists featured was born in 1944, the youngest in 1956. So the artists are quite young; their art is the art of the 1980s.
