An algorithm is proposed for the segmentation of image into multiple levels using mean and standard deviation in the wavelet domain. The procedure provides for variable size segmentation with bigger block size around the mean, and having smaller blocks at the ends of histogram plot of each horizontal, vertical and diagonal components, while for the approximation component it provides for finer block size around the mean, and larger blocks at the ends of histogram plot coefficients. It is found…

A Statistical Method for Non-Linear Quantization in Lossy JPEG2000 Compression

Through empirical results, it has been concluded that for low bit rate compression, the quantization error introduced by uniform quantizer is higher than that of non-linear quantizer, and thus suggesting the use ofNon- linear quantizer forLow bit rate lossy compression.

Multisegmentation through wavelets: Comparing the efficacy of Daubechies vs Coiflets

It is found that the performance of Coiflet wavelets is better, as compared to Daubechies wavelet, in the context of the present algorithm.

An Adaptive Statistical Non-uniform Quantizer for Detail Wavelet Components in Lossy JPEG2000 Image Compression

Through the objective and subjective assessments, it is shown that the non-uniform quantizer performs better than the deadzone uniform quantizer in the perceptual quality of the reconstructed image, especially at low bitrates.

A New Approach for Multilevel Threshold Selection

A hill-clustering technique is applied to the image histogram in order to approximately determine the peak locations of the histogram, which gives the global minimum of each rational function, which corresponds to a multilevel threshold value.

An optimal multiple threshold scheme for image segmentation

A fast search scheme is presented for finding single and multiple thresholds that maximize interclass variance between dark and bright regions that is orders of magnitude faster and uses a criterion function for its search scheme.

Survey over image thresholding techniques and quantitative performance evaluation

40 selected thresholding methods from various categories are compared in the context of nondestructive testing applications as well as for document images, and the thresholding algorithms that perform uniformly better over nonde- structive testing and document image applications are identified.

Image quality assessment: from error visibility to structural similarity

A structural similarity index is developed and its promise is demonstrated through a set of intuitive examples, as well as comparison to both subjective ratings and state-of-the-art objective methods on a database of images compressed with JPEG and JPEG2000.
