The Intermediate Palomar Transient Factory reported the discovery of an unusual type II-P supernova iPTF14hls. Instead of an ∼100 day plateau as observed for ordinary type II-P supernovae, the light curve of iPTF14hls has at least five distinct peaks, followed by a steep decline at ∼1000 days since discovery. Until 500 days since discovery, the effective temperature of iPTF14hls is roughly constant at 5000–6000 K. In this paper, we propose that iPTF14hls is likely powered by intermittent…

iPTF14hls in the Circumstellar Medium Interaction Model: A Promising Candidate for a Pulsational Pair-instability Supernova

iPTF14hls is a luminous Type II supernova (SN) with a bumpy light curve whose origin remains under debate. It maintains a roughly constant effective temperature and luminosity for about 600 days

Late-time observations of the extraordinary Type II supernova iPTF14hls

Aims. We study iPTF14hls, a luminous and extraordinary long-lived Type II supernova, which lately has attracted much attention and disparate interpretation. Methods. We have presented new optical

Fast Blue Optical Transients Due to Circumstellar Interaction and the Mysterious Supernova SN 2018gep

The discovery of SN 2018gep (ZTF 18abukavn) challenged our understanding of the late-phase evolution of massive stars and their supernovae (SNe). The fast rise in luminosity of this SN

DES16C3cje: A low-luminosity, long-lived supernova

We present DES16C3cje, a low-luminosity, long-lived type II supernova (SN II) at redshift 0.0618, detected by the Dark Energy Survey (DES). DES16C3cje is a unique SN. The spectra are characterized

Emission peaks in the light curve of core collapse supernovae by late jets

We build a toy model where the central object, i.e. a newly born neutron star or a black hole, launches jets at late times and show that these jets might account for peaks in the light curve of

The Energy Sources of Superluminous Supernovae

Supernovae (SNe) are the most brilliant optical stellar-class explosions. Over the past two decades, several optical transient survey projects discovered more than ∼ 100 so-called superluminous

Is supernova SN 2020faa an iPTF14hls look-alike?

Context. We present observations of ZTF20aatqesi (SN 2020faa). This Type II supernova (SN) displays a luminous light curve (LC) that started to rebrighten from an initial decline. We investigate this

Mechanical Feedback from Black Hole Accretion as an Energy Source of Core-collapse Supernova Explosions

According to the traditional scenario for core-collapse supernovae, the core of the collapsing star forms a neutron star (NS) and its gravitational energy release sends out a shock wave into the

I construct the class of supernovae and supernova progenitors that result from fatal common envelope evolution (CEE). The fatal CEE progenitors are stellar binary systems where a companion spirals-in

New regimes in the observation of core-collapse supernovae

Core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) mark the deaths of stars more massive than about eight times the mass of the Sun and are intrinsically the most common kind of catastrophic cosmic explosions. They

SUPERNOVA LIGHT CURVES POWERED BY FALLBACK ACCRETION

Some fraction of the material ejected in a core collapse supernova explosion may remain bound to the compact remnant, and eventually turn around and fall back. We show that the late time (≳days)
