Zonulae occludentes and gap junctions were examined both in the intact mouse liver and in a junction-rich membrane fraction from homogenized mouse liver. These preparations were visualized with the techniques of uranyl acetate staining en bloc, staining with colloidal lanthanum, negative staining with phosphotungstate, and freeze-cleaving. The zonula occludens is arranged as a meshwork of branching and anastomosing threadlike contacts sealing the lumen of the bile canaliculus from the liver…

Zonulae occludentes in junctional complex-enriched fractions from mouse liver: preliminary morphological and biochemical characterization

A bile canaliculus-derived preparation containing junctional complexes has been obtained from mouse livers using subcellular fractionation techniques and the network of fibrils visualized in these fractions by negative staining is structurally resistant to treatment with DOC, but is either solubilized or disrupted by N-lauroylsarcosine.

Cingulin, a new peripheral component of tight junctions

Immunofluorescence and immunoelectron microscopy of brush-border cells with anti-cingulin antibodies show that cingulin is localized in the apical zone of the terminal web, at the endofacial surfaces of the zonula occludens, which is an acidic, heat-stable protein, with a highly elongated shape.

THE SPLITTING OF HEPATOCYTE GAP JUNCTIONS AND ZONULAE OCCLUDENTES WITH HYPERTONIC DISACCHARIDES

Mouse livers were perfused in situ through the portal vein with the disaccharides sucrose, lactose, maltose, and cellobiose in hypertonic concentrations, resulting in plasmolysis and splitting of the gap junctions and zonulae occludentes.

Alterations of tight and gap junctions in mouse hepatocytes following administration of colchicine

It is tentatively suggested that the intact microtubular system of the cell may play a decisive role in the regular formation of gap and tight junctions, either directly or indirectly via microfilaments.

VARIATIONS IN TIGHT AND GAP JUNCTIONS IN MAMMALIAN TISSUES

The fine structure and distribution of tight and gap junctions in epithelia of the rat pancreas, liver, adrenal cortex, epididymis, and duodenum, and in smooth muscle were examined in paraformaldehyde-glutaraldehyde-fixed, tracer-permeated, and freeze-fractured tissue preparations.

Tight junctions. Their structure, composition, and function.

The purpose of the present review is to provide an overview of the structure and composition of tight junctions and to summarize some of the factors which influence their function.

Three Types of Gap Junctions Interconnecting Intestinal Epitbelial Cells Visualized by Freeze-Etching ( membranes / rat )

Three different types of gap junctions interlinking adjacent epithelial cells of the small intestine are distinguished by using morphological criteria, one of the basic prerequisites for the development of multicellular organisms that are ordered according to a pattern and can act in a coordinated way.

A freeze-fracture and lanthanum tracer study of the complex junction between Sertoli cells of the canine testis

This is the first demonstration in a vertebrate tissue of a true septate junction, associated with specializations of the Sertoli cell cytoplasm, that is clearly distinguished from tight junctions.

Occluding junctions and cytoskeletal components in a cultured transporting epithelium

The correlation among cell shape, cytoskeletal patterns, and electrical resistance in the EGTA-opened and resealed monolayers suggests that microfilaments, through their association with plasma membrane components, play a role in positioning the junctional strands and influence the degree of sealing of the occluding junctions.

THE ISOLATION OF MOUSE HEPATOCYTE GAP JUNCTIONS

Electron microscopy with thin-sectioning and negative staining techniques reveals that the final pellet is a very pure preparation of gap junctions, accompanied by a small amount of amorphous contamination.

JUNCTIONS BETWEEN INTIMATELY APPOSED CELL MEMBRANES IN THE VERTEBRATE BRAIN

Endothelial and epithelial tight junctions occlude the interspaces between blood and parenchyma or cerebral ventricles, thereby constituting a structural basis for the blood-brain and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barriers.

Fine structure of the surface of mouse hepatic cells.

Mouse hepatic cells appear in thin sections as polygons with six or more sides that may contact either bile canaliculi, the narrow intercellular space, the space of Disse or extensions of the spaceof Disse between adjacent cells.

HEXAGONAL ARRAY OF SUBUNITS IN INTERCELLULAR JUNCTIONS OF THE MOUSE HEART AND LIVER

A new technique, based on the observations of Doggenweiler and Frenks, has allowed us to demonstrate the presence of similar structures in sections of mouse heart and of mouse liver.

It is concluded that the endothelial cell junctions are most likely to be the morphological equivalent of the small pore system proposed by physiologists for the passage of small, lipid-insoluble molecules across the endothelium.

CELL JUNCTIONS IN AMPHIBIAN SKIN

Interpreted in the light of current physiological data, these findings suggest that the diffusion of water, ions, and small, water-soluble molecules is impeded along the intercellular spaces of the epidermis by zonulae occludentes while it is facilitated from cell to cell within the epidesis by z onulae and maculae OccludENTes.

TIGHT JUNCTIONS BETWEEN CELLS IN THE EARLY CHICK EMBRYO AS VISUALIZED WITH THE ELECTRON MICROSCOPE

A preliminary account of observations made over the past few years on the fine structure of cell contact specializations in the primitive germ layers and developing tissues of the chick embryo is published.

JUNCTIONAL COMPLEXES IN VARIOUS EPITHELIA

The tight junction is impervious to concentrated protein solutions and appears to function as a diffusion barrier or "seal," and the desmosome and probably also the zonula adhaerens may represent intercellular attachment devices.

A STUDY OF THE STRUCTURE AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE NEXUS

The nexuses which occur in epithelia in frog skin and rat salivary gland are distributed as though to provide seals against electrochemical backleaks and sites of chemical exchange between cell interiors.

STRUCTURE OF COUPLED AND UNCOUPLED CELL JUNCTIONS

Treatment of the salivary gland cells with media, which interrupt cellular communication by reducing junctional membrane permeability or perijunctional insulation, produces no alterations in the junctional structure discernible in electron micrographs of glutaraldehyde-fixed cell material.

HEXAGONAL ARRAY OF SUBUNITS IN TIGHT JUNCTIONS SEPARATED FROM ISOLATED RAT LIVER PLASMA MEMBRANES

It is concluded that the hexagonal subunit pattern is present in the tight junctions of isolated rat liver plasma membranes, and that this structural differentiation may be related to the intercellular diffusion afforded by the junctional membrane.
