Shannon's mutual information for discrete random variables has been generalized to random ensembles by R. L. Dobrushin, M. S. Pinsker, and others. Dobrushin also proposed a rather indirect and not very intuitive definition of conditional mutual information which has the additional shortcoming of requiring the existence of certain regular conditional probability measures.
