A continuum description of unstructured meshes in two dimensions is proposed. In the limit of an increasingly finer mesh (smaller cells), and away from irregular vertices, the meshes described have ideally-shaped cells (squares or equilateral triangles). The continuum description has two components. The first is a Riemannian manifold, completely defined by a single real function φ on the domain, interpreted as minus the logarithm of the local cell-size.
