WWe can divide the world of computing into two separate, orthogonal components. Informally, the computer is one component, and the asynchronous ensemble in which computers are embedded is the other. By computer we mean any activity locus, any active synchronous device—any device that does (in effect) one thing at a time. An asynchronous ensemble is a communicating collection of activities.
