A Comparison of RANS-Based Turbulence Modeling for Flow over a Wall-Mounted Square Cylinder

  title={A Comparison of RANS-Based Turbulence Modeling for Flow over a Wall-Mounted Square Cylinder},
  author={Peter L. Davis and A. T. Rinehimer and Mesbah Uddin},
Using experimental data from a study of flow over a wall-mounted square cylinder (h=4d) as a baseline, three Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes turbulence models are used in a commercial CFD code StarCCM+ to compare the relative accuracy of the tested models. In virtually every standard of comparison applied in this study, the Realizable k − ε with a twolayer treatment proved to be far superior to both the k − ε V2F (All y+ hybrid wall treatment) and the k − ω models. To observe mesh dependence…

While Reynolds-averaged simulations have found success in the evaluation of many canonical shear flows and moderately separated flows, their application to highly separated flows have shown notable
Evaluation of the efficacy of turbulence models for swirling flows and the effect of turbulence intensity on heat transfer
ABSTRACT Turbulent fluid flows with a swirl occur in numerous engineering practice situations. Five widely recognized turbulence models were evaluated using experimental results. Among the RANS-based

Numerical and experimental hydrodynamic study of a coolant distributor for grinding applications
ABSTRACT In grinding, the high frictional energy is converted into heat, which may cause thermal damage and degradation of the wheel and the workpiece. Unwanted thermal effects must thus be reduced,
Simulation of Fluid Flow Dynamics in Designing a Bi-Ventricular Assist Device Using CFD Tools
The design and simulation of 6 impellers for the heart pump, each having different design structures for the LVAD model initially, and the best design model of the impeller was then selected that provided the ultimate best value of efficiency and head pressure.

Modifications of the v2-f Model for Computing the Flow in a 3D Wall Jet
In this work the flows in a three-dimensional wall jet and in a fully developed plane channel are computed. Two different turbulence models are used, the low-Re model [1] and the model [2, 3]. Two
Alternating half-loop shedding in the turbulent wake of a finite surface-mounted square cylinder with a thin boundary layer
