In their letter to Bagoas, the pehah of Judea, in 408 B.c.,104 the priests of the Jewish colony at Elephantine tell that at the time of the destruction of their temple by the Egyptian nationalists three years before they had written a letter, imploring aid in rebuilding, to Johanan, kahana' rabba', and his associates, the priests, in Jerusalem, but had received no reply thereto. Kahana' rabba' is manifestly the Aramaic equivalent of the Hebrew hakohen hagadol, "high-priest." It evidences… Expand
