We present a Chandra study of the emission-weighted metal abundances in 28 early-type galaxies, spanning ~3 orders of magnitude in X-ray luminosity (LX). We report constraints for Fe, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, and Ni. We find no evidence of the very subsolar Fe abundance (ZFe) historically reported, confirming a trend in recent observations of bright galaxies and groups, nor do we find any correlation between ZFe and luminosity. Excepting one case, the ISM is single-phase, indicating that… Expand

ELEMENTAL ABUNDANCES IN THE X-RAY GAS OF EARLY-TYPE GALAXIES WITH XMM-NEWTON AND CHANDRA OBSERVATIONS
The source of hot gas in elliptical galaxies is thought to be due to stellar mass loss, with contributions from supernova (SN) events and possibly from infall from a surrounding environment. ThisExpand
X-ray Properties of Young Early Type Galaxies: II. Abundance Ratio in the Hot ISM
Using Chandra X-ray observations of young, post-merger elliptical galaxies, we present X-ray characteristics of age-related observational results, by comparing with typical old elliptical galaxies inExpand
Metal abundances in the hot ISM of early-type galaxies
Understanding the process of metal enrichment is one of the key problems for our picture of structure formation and evolution, in which early-type galaxies are a crucial ingredient. X-rayExpand
THE ABUNDANCE PATTERN IN THE HOT ISM OF NGC 4472: INSIGHTS AND ANOMALIES
Important clues to the chemical and dynamical history of elliptical galaxies are encoded in the abundances of heavy elements in the X-ray emitting plasma. We derive the hot interstellar mediumExpand
Chandra survey of nearby highly inclined disc galaxies – I. X-ray measurements of galactic coronae
We present a systematical analysis of the Chandra observations of 53 nearby highly inclined (i 60 ◦ ) disc galaxies to study the coronae around them. This sample covers a broad range of galaxyExpand
A chandra view of dark matter in early-type galaxies
We present a Chandra study of mass profiles in seven elliptical galaxies, of which three have galaxy-scale and four have group-scale halos, demarcated at 1013 M☉. These represent the best availableExpand
Low-Mass X-Ray Binaries and Globular Clusters in Early-Type Galaxies. I. Chandra Observations
We present a Chandra survey of LMXBs in 24 early-type galaxies. Correcting for detection incompleteness, the X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of each galaxy is consistent with a power law withExpand
Metal abundances in the cool cores of galaxy clusters
We use XMM-Newton data to carry out a detailed study of the Si, Fe and Ni abundances in the cool cores of a representative sample of 26 local clusters. We performed a careful evaluation of theExpand
An In-Depth Study of the Abundance Pattern in the Hot Interstellar Medium in NGC 4649
We present our X-ray imaging spectroscopic analysis of data from deep Suzaku and XMM-Newton Observatory exposures of the Virgo Cluster elliptical galaxy NGC 4649 (M60), focusing on the abundanceExpand
LOW-MASS X-RAY BINARIES AND GLOBULAR CLUSTERS IN EARLY-TYPE GALAXIES. II. GLOBULAR CLUSTER CANDIDATES AND THEIR MASS-METALLICITY RELATION
We present an astrometry and photometry catalogue of globular cluster (GC) candidates detected with the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 in a sample of 19 early-type galaxies,Expand

XMM-NEWTON OBSERVATIONS OF NGC 507: SUPERSOLAR METAL ABUNDANCES IN THE HOT INTERSTELLAR MEDIUM
We present the results of the X-ray XMM-Newton observations of NGC 507, a dominant elliptical galaxy in a small group of galaxies, and report supersolar metal abundances of both Fe and α-elements inExpand
Metal Abundances in the Hot Interstellar Medium in Early-Type Galaxies Observed with ASCA
We have analyzed ASCA data of 27 early-type galaxies, and studied the properties of their X-ray emitting ISM (Inter Stellar Medium) in detail. We found that overlapping lines and free-boundExpand
SN Ia Enrichment in Virgo Early-type Galaxies from ROSAT and ASCA Observations
We analyzed nine X-ray-bright Virgo early-type galaxies observed by both ASCA and ROSAT. Through spatially resolved spectroscopy, we determined the radial temperature profiles and abundances of Mg,Expand
X-ray spectral analysis of elliptical galaxies from ASCA: the Fe abundance in a multiphase medium
We present spectral analysis of ASCA data of 17 elliptical and three lenticular galaxies most of which have high Lx/LB. Single-temperature models ( mekal and Raymond–Smith) give unacceptable fitsExpand
A Chandra View of the Normal S0 Galaxy NGC 1332. II. Solar Abundances in the Hot Gas and Implications for Supernova Enrichment
Using a new Chandra ACIS-S3 observation of the normal, isolated, moderate-LX lenticular galaxy NGC 1332, we resolve the emission into ~75 point sources and a significant diffuse component. We presentExpand
XMM-Newton and Chandra Observations of the Galaxy Group NGC 5044. II. Metal Abundances and Supernova Fraction
Using new XMM and Chandra observations, we present an analysis of the metal abundances of the hot gas within a radius of 100 kpc of the bright nearby galaxy group NGC 5044. Motivated by theExpand
X‐ray evidence for multiphase hot gas with nearly solar Fe abundances in the brightest groups of galaxies
We analyse the ASCA spectra accumulated within ∼100 kpc radii of 12 of the brightest groups of galaxies. Upon fitting isothermal models (1T) jointly to the ASCA SIS and GIS spectra we obtain fits forExpand
XMM–Newton and Chandra observations of three X-ray-faint early-type galaxies
We present XMM-Newton observations of three X-ray-underluminous elliptical galaxies, NGC 3585, 4494 and 5322. All three galaxies have relatively large optical luminosities (log L B = 10.35-10.67 L ○.Expand
Line-strengths in early-type galaxies
We have analysed Mg, Hβ and Fe line-strengths in a sample of elliptical, SO and brightest cluster galaxies. For 15 galaxies, our spectra extend to approximately the half-light radius(r_e), and we areExpand
A Chandra view of the normal S0 galaxy NGC 1332. I: An unbroken, steep power-law luminosity function for the low-mass X-ray binary population
Chandra ACIS -S3 observations of the nearby S0 galaxy NGC 1332 resolve much of the X-ray emission into 73 point sources, of which 37 lie within the D25 isophote. The remaining galaxy emissionExpand
