Different databases of phonetic units are required in multilingual Text-to-Speech systems based on concatenative synthesis. We are currently developing a TTS system able to convert text either in Catalan and Spanish, with some of the modules being used indistinctly by the two languages while others are specific to each language. In order to reduce the total amount of units, a bilingual database has been obtained from two monolingual databases recorded by the same speaker, which contains all…

GENERATION OF UNIT DATABASES FOR THE UPC TEXT TO SPEECH SYSTEM

TLDR
The method comprises the automatic segmentation and pitch synchronous labeling of the units and a selection procedure to extract the best instance per unit from a generic speech corpus.

Overcoming the limitations of statistical parametric speech synthesis

TLDR
This thesis introduces a methodology for testing hypothesised causes of limited quality within HMM speech synthesis systems, and makes two types of contributions to the field of speech synthesis.

A keyvowel approach to the synthesis of regional accents of English

TLDR
The “keyvowel” system can be used throughout the synthesis system, avoiding the need to make accent-specific changes manually and functions as a meta-accent that subsumes vowel-related information in all accents of English.

Prosody and the Selection of Source Units for Concatenative Synthesis

TLDR
This chapter describes a procedure for processing a large speech corpus to provide a reduced set of units for concatenative synthesis, and presents a method for selecting units for synthesis by optimizing a weighting between continuity distortion and unit distortion.

A mixed inventory structure for German concatenative synthesis

TLDR
A mixed inventory structure that is syllable-oriented but does not demand a definite decision about the position of a syllable boundary is described, which confirms that speech generated with the mixed inventory is superior regarding general acceptance.
