An updated, binary-coded message has been developed for transmission to extraterrestrial intelligences in the Milky Way galaxy. The proposed message includes basic mathematical and physical concepts to establish a universal means of communication followed by information on the biochemical composition of life on Earth, the Solar System’s time-stamped position in the Milky Way relative to known globular clusters, as well as digitized depictions of the Solar System, and Earth’s surface. The…

A three-dimensional map of the Milky Way using classical Cepheid variable stars
A map of the Milky Way in three dimensions, based on the positions and distances of thousands of classical Cepheid variable stars, shows the structure of the Galaxy’s young stellar population and allows us to constrain the warped shape of the galactic disc.
Gravitational Lens of the Sun: Its Potential for Observations and Communications over Interstellar Distances
The gravitational field of the sun acts as a spherical lens to magnify the intensity of radiation from a distant source along a semi-infinite focal line. A spacecraft anywhere on that line in
Voyager mission description
The Voyager Project, managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, involves the lauching of two advanced spacecraft to explore the Jovian and Saturnian systems, as well as interplanetary space. The
Preface: Key technologies for enhancing the performance of FAST
The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescop e (FAST) passed its national acceptance inspection on 2020 January 11. This special issue incl udes a total of 15 papers, which are selected
A Catalog of Parameters for Globular Clusters in the Milky Way
A database of parameters for globular star clusters in the Milky Way is described which is available in electronic form through the WorldWideWeb. The information in the catalog includes up-to-date
Type Ia Supernova Distances at Redshift > 1.5 from the Hubble Space Telescope Multi-cycle Treasury Programs: The Early Expansion Rate
We present an analysis of 15 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) at redshift z 〉 1 (9 at 1.5 〈 z 〈 2.3) recently discovered in the CANDELS and CLASH Multi-Cycle Treasury programs using WFC3 on the Hubble
