We report the discovery of SDSS J133725.26+395237.7 (hereafter SDSS J1337+3952), a double-lined white dwarf (WD+WD) binary identified in early data from the fifth-generation Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-V). The double-lined nature of the system enables us to fully determine its orbital and stellar parameters with follow-up Gemini spectroscopy and Swift UVOT ultraviolet fluxes. The system is nearby (d = 113 pc), and consists of a 0.51 M ⊙ primary and a 0.32 M ⊙ secondary. SDSS J1337+3952 is a…

Hidden in plain sight: a double-lined white dwarf binary 26 pc away and a distant cousin

We present high-resolution spectroscopy of two nearby white dwarfs with inconsistent spectroscopic and parallax distances. The first one, PG 1632+177, is a 13th magnitude white dwarf only 25.6 pc

Post common envelope binaries from the SDSS VI. SDSS J120615.73+510047.0 : a new low accretion rate magnetic binary

We report the discovery of the ninth pre-polar, consisting o f a late-type ZAMS secondary and a magnetic white dwarf. The white dwarf accretes at extreme low rate, ˙ M∼ 10 −14 M⊙ yr −1 , from the

Precise parameters for both white dwarfs in the eclipsing binary CSS 41177

We present ULTRACAM photometry and X-Shooter spectroscopy of the eclipsing double white dwarf binary CSS 41177, the only such system that is also a double-lined spectroscopic binary. Combined

Two new double-lined spectroscopic binary white dwarfs

We present radial velocity observations of four binary white dwarf candidates identified through their over-luminosity. We identify two new double-lined spectroscopic binary systems, WD 0311-649 and

A catalogue of white dwarfs in Gaia EDR3

We present a catalogue of white dwarf candidates selected from Gaia early data release three (EDR3). We applied several selection criteria in absolute magnitude, colour, and Gaia quality flags to

AGaiaData Release 2 catalogue of white dwarfs and a comparison with SDSS

We present a catalogue of white dwarf candidates selected from the second data release of Gaia (DR2). We used a sample of spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

The ELM Survey. VIII. Ninety-eight Double White Dwarf Binaries

We present the final sample of 98 detached double white dwarf (WD) binaries found in the Extremely Low Mass (ELM) Survey, a spectroscopic survey targeting <0.3 M⊙ He-core WDs completed in the Sloan

Double white dwarfs and LISA

Close pairs of white dwarfs are potential progenitors of type Ia supernovae and they are common, with the order of 100–300 million in the Galaxy. As such they will be significant, probably dominant,

A pulsating white dwarf in an eclipsing binary

White dwarfs are the burnt-out cores of Sun-like stars and are the fate of 97 per cent of the stars in our Galaxy. The internal structure and composition of white dwarfs are hidden by their high

Low-mass white dwarfs need friends: five new double-degenerate close binary stars

We have discovered five detached close binary stars out of seven white dwarfs chosen for their low mass (<0.45 Msun). The high success rate of our observations supports the notion that evolution
