BACKGROUND Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are noncomplex sarcomas that often are due to c-kit-activating and platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha gene (PDGFRalpha)-activating mutations and perturbations of their related signaling pathways.
