Appendicitis is the most common abdominal emergency. The lifetime risk of developing appendicitis is approximately 7% and it is the most common acute abdominal emergency that requires surgical treatment. The overall incidence of this condition is approximately 11 cases per 10,000 population per year. Acute appendicitis may occur at any age, although it is relatively rare at the extremes of age.
