The research programme of high-energy nucleus-nucleus phy sics is focused on the study of the fundamental theory of the strong interaction – Q uantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD) – in extreme conditions of temperature, densit y and small parton momentum fraction (lowx) – see e.g. [1] for a recent review. By colliding two heavy nuclei at ultrarelativistic energies one expects to f orm a hot and dense deconfined medium whose collective (colour) dynamics can be st udied experimentally.
