50 Years of Schumann Resonance

  title={50 Years of Schumann Resonance},
  author={K. Schlegel and M. F{\"u}llekrug},
In 1952 Winfried Otto Schumann, at that time Director of the Electrophysical Institute at the Technical University of Munich, published his first paper about electromagnetic waves in the waveguide which is formed by the earth's surface and the ionosphere. Since this time the study of these, later referred to as Schumann resonance waves, has become an interesting subject for research. With modern measurement techniques the recording of these resonances opens up various application possibilities… Expand

Analysis of Schumann Resonances based on the international reference ionosphere
Schumann Resonances (SRs) are simulated and analyzed in this work using the geodesic finite-difference time-domain (GFDTD) method coupled with the international reference ionosphere (IRI). ThroughExpand
Erratum to: Schumann resonance observation in China and anomalous disturbance possibly associated with Tohoku M9.0 earthquake
Schumann resonance (SR) is an electromagnetic resonance phenomenon in the Earth–ionosphere cavity exited by global lightning activities when the wavelength matches the circumference of the Earth, andExpand
Study of ELF Propagation Parameters Based on the Simulated Schumann Resonances
The extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic (EM) wave propagation parameters are obtained and studied based on the simulated Schumann resonances (SRs). To obtain the SRs, ELF EM waveExpand
FDTD modeling of diurnal/seasonal variations of Schumann resonance
A three-dimensional geodesic finite difference time domain (G-FDTD) algorithm is employed to model the diurnal/seasonal variations of the first five Schumann resonance parameters (SRs), includingExpand
Correction to: Mathematical Simulation of the Ionospheric Electric Field as a Part of the Global Electric Circuit
Our colleague A. P. Nickolaenko has pointed out an unfortunate, and obvious, misprint in our paper. The error is in line 5 of page 12 showing values for s0, which corresponds to the value of theExpand
Mathematical Simulation of the Ionospheric Electric Field as a Part of the Global Electric Circuit
Electric currents flowing in the global electric circuit are closed by ionospheric currents. A model for the distribution of the ionospheric potential which drives these currents is constructed. OnlyExpand
2-D model of the global ionospheric conductor connected with the magnetospheric conductors
A model of the ionospheric global conductor is designed. The ionospheric conductor is considered in the framework of a two-dimensional approximation based on high conductivity in the direction of theExpand
The propagation model and characteristics for extremely low frequency electromagnetic wave in Earth-ionosphere system and its application in geophysics prospecting
Abstract This paper employs the finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD) to model and study the propagation characteristics and distribution features for extremely low frequency (ELF) inExpand
3-Axis geomagnetic magnetometer system design using superconducting quantum interference devices
ii Abstract This work discusses the design of a 3-axis Geomagnetometer SQUID System (GSS), in which HTS SQUIDs are used unshielded. The initial GSS installed at SANSA was fully operable, however theExpand
A network of magnetometers for multi-scale urban science and informatics
The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is identified as the dominant signal in the authors' observations, exhibiting aspects of both broadband noise and coherent periodic features. Expand

Schumann resonance parameter changes during high‐energy particle precipitation
A systematic study of Schumann resonance parameters during high-energy particle precipitation events is presented. Protons and electrons with energies above 1 MeV ionize the upper boundary of theExpand
The Schumann Resonance: A Global Tropical Thermometer
The Schumann resonance, a global electromagnetic phenomenon, is shown to be a sensitive measure of temperature fluctuations in the tropical atmosphere, which increases nonlinearly with temperature in the interaction between deep convection and ice microphysics. Expand
Global triangulation of intense lightning discharges
A global network of three electromagnetic measurement instruments is used to simultaneously record time series of globally observable Extremely-Low-Frequency (ELF) magnetic field disturbances whichExpand
Global ionospheric D-layer height monitoring
A global two-scale height ionospheric conductivity profile is inferred from the mean electromagnetic-wave propagation velocities of seven Earth-ionosphere cavity resonances in the frequency range .Expand
Electrical discharge from a thundercloud top to the lower ionosphere
A video recording of a blue jet propagating upwards from a thundercloud to an altitude of about 70 km is reported, taken at the Arecibo Observatory, Puerto Rico, to speculate that it may be common and therefore represent an unaccounted for component of the global electric circuit. Expand
Television Image of a Large Upward Electrical Discharge Above a Thunderstorm System
An image of an unusual luminous electrical discharge over a thunderstorm 250 kilometers from the observing site has been obtained with a low-light-level television camera and resembled two jets or fountains and was probably caused by two localizd electric charge concentrations at the cloud tops. It is suggested that upper-tropospheric water-vapour changes can be inferred from records of global lightning activity, readily obtained from observations at a single location on the Earth's surface. Expand
