We have studied the effects of 5‐HT1A and 5‐HT7 serotonin receptor activation in hippocampal CA3‐CA1 synaptic transmission using patch clamp on mouse brain slices. Application of either 5‐HT or 8‐OH DPAT, a mixed 5‐HT1A/5‐HT7 receptor agonist, inhibited AMPA receptor‐mediated excitatory post synaptic currents (EPSCs); this effect was mimicked by the 5‐HT1A receptor agonist 8‐OH PIPAT and blocked by the 5‐HT1A antagonist NAN‐190. 8‐OH DPAT increased paired‐pulse facilitation and reduced the… Expand
Co-activation of both 5-HT1A and 5-HT7 receptors induced attenuation of glutamatergic synaptic transmission in the rat visual cortex
TLDR
5-HT suppressed glutamatergic synaptic transmission by co-activation of synaptic 5-HT1A receptors and 5- HT7 receptors in layer II/III pyramidal neurons of the rat visual cortex. Expand
Interplay between Serotonin 5‐HT1A and 5‐HT7 Receptors in Depressive Disorders
TLDR
This review focuses on possible cross talk between two serotonin receptors, 5‐ HT1A and the 5‐HT7, and the implication of heterodimerization in the development and maintenance of depression. Expand
Serotonin 5-HT1A Receptor-Mediated Reduction of Excitatory Synaptic Transmission in Layers II/III of the Parasubiculum
TLDR
The data suggest that the effects of serotonin on cognitive function may depend in part upon a 5-HT1A-mediated reduction of excitatory synaptic transmission in the parasubiculum, which may also affect synaptic processing in the entorhinal cortex. Expand
The 5-HT7 receptor triggers cerebellar long-term synaptic depression via PKC-MAPK
TLDR
It is shown for the first time that 5-HT7R exerts a fine regulation of cerebellar bidirectional synaptic plasticity that might be involved in cognitive processes and neuropsychiatric disorders involving the cerebellum. Expand
Hippocampal 5‐HT7 receptors signal phosphorylation of the GluA1 subunit to facilitate AMPA receptor mediated‐neurotransmission in vitro and in vivo
TLDR
The purposes of the present study were to investigate a direct modulation of the GluA1 AMPA receptors subunit and determine how this might influence AMPA receptor function. Expand
Novel agonists for serotonin 5-HT7 receptors reverse metabotropic glutamate receptor-mediated long-term depression in the hippocampus of wild-type and Fmr1 KO mice, a model of Fragile X Syndrome
TLDR
LP-211, a high affinity selective agonist of 5-HT7 receptors, reverses mGluR-LTD in wt and Fmr1 KO mice, correcting a synaptic malfunction in the mouse model of Fragile X Syndrome, indicating that LP-211 and BA-10 might be used as novel pharmacological tools for the therapy of Fragiles X Syndrome. Expand
5‐HT1A receptor‐mediated attenuation of synaptic transmission in rat medial vestibular nucleus impacts on vestibular‐related motor function
TLDR
5‐HT1A receptor activation attenuated evoked excitatory post Synaptic currents and evoked inhibitory postsynaptic currents via a presynaptic mechanism in the vestibular nucleus. Expand
5‐Hydroxytryptamine1A receptor‐activation hyperpolarizes pyramidal cells and suppresses hippocampal gamma oscillations via Kir3 channel activation
TLDR
Rhythmic activity in the gamma frequency range in the hippocampus is modulated by neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and histamine, and it is shown that serotonin suppresses hippocampal gamma oscillations via activation of the receptor 5‐HT1A. Expand
Serotonin gating of cortical and thalamic glutamate inputs onto principal neurons of the basolateral amygdala
TLDR
Patch‐clamp recordings from BLA neurons in an ex vivo slice preparation are used to examine the effect of 5‐HT on extrinsic sensory inputs, and to determine if any pathway specificity exists in 5‐ HT regulation of glutamatergic transmission. Expand
Activation of 5-hyrdoxytryptamine 7 receptors within the rat nucleus tractus solitarii modulates synaptic properties
TLDR
A complex role for 5-HT7 receptors in the nTS that mediate its diverse effects on cardiorespiratory parameters is indicated. Expand

Differential modulation of Ih by 5‐HT receptors in mouse CA1 hippocampal neurons
TLDR
Differential serotonergic modulation for the hyperpolarization‐activated current Ih is verified by immunofluorescence stainings with an antibody against the 5‐HT4A receptor, revealing receptor expression at the somata of the CA1 region. Expand
Adaptive changes in 5‐HT1A receptor‐mediated hippocampal inhibition in the alert rat produced by repeated 8‐OH‐DPAT treatment
TLDR
It was concluded that repeated treatment with 8‐OH‐DPAT produced adaptive changes which resulted in a reduction in the dynamic range of 5‐HT1A receptor‐mediated transmission in the hippocampus. Expand
Serotonin 5‐HT1A receptor blockade enhances Ca2+/calmodulin‐dependent protein kinase II function and membrane expression of AMPA receptor subunits in the rat hippocampus: implications for memory formation
TLDR
It is suggested that blockade of hippocampal 5‐HT1A receptors favours molecular events critically involved in memory formation, and provides an in’vivo molecular basis for the proposed utility of 5‐ HT1A receptor antagonists in the treatment of cognitive disorders. Expand
Mice lacking 5‐HT7 receptors show specific impairments in contextual learning
TLDR
The results indicate an important role for the 5‐HT7 receptor in contextual hippocampal‐dependent learning and suggest a possible neuronal correlate for such a role is present within the CA1 region of the hippocampus. Expand
Serotonin reduces inhibition via 5-HT1A receptors in area CA1 of rat hippocampal slices in vitro
TLDR
The data indicate that 5-HT modulates fast and slow synaptic inhibition of principal cells using presynaptic mechanisms involving the inhibition of inhibitory interneurons. Expand
Effect of the selective 5‐HT1A receptor antagonist WAY 100635 on the inhibition of e.p.s.ps produced by 5‐HT in the CA1 region of rat hippocampal slices
TLDR
The data demonstrate that WAY 100635 is devoid of direct effects on CA1 pyramidal cell excitability and on evoked e.p.s.ps, and demonstrate that the inhibitory action of 5‐HT on excitatory synaptic transmission in CA1 is mediated by 5‐ HT1A receptors. Expand

TLDR
A role for 5‐HT7 receptor stimulation in 5‐CT induced hypothermia in guinea‐pigs is suggested, and time spent in Paradoxical Sleep (PS) during the first 3  h of EEG recording in conscious rats is significantly reduced. Expand
Serotonin and 8-OH-DPAT reduce excitatory transmission in rat hippocampal area CA1 via reduction in presumed presynaptic Ca2+ entry

It is suggested that 5-HT acts at presynaptic 5- HT1A receptors to reduce Ca2+ entry and thereby glutamatergic synaptic transmission. Expand
Opposing effects of AMPA and 5-HT1A receptor blockade on passive avoidance and object recognition performance: Correlation with AMPA receptor subunit expression in rat hippocampus
TLDR
The proposed utility of 5-HT1A antagonists in the treatment of cognitive disorders is supported by the findings of biochemical studies performed on rat hippocampus after the retention tests, and administration of WAY-100635 before object recognition training improved recognition memory 24h later and potentiated the learning-associated increase in AMPA receptor subunits. Expand
