  • The destitute are not conceived of as categorically different either terminologically or in attributes; they were neither ostracised nor hopeless. Decline in life standards related to ageing, disability, loss of kin support, and shocks. Life satisfaction often declined and the young were more optimistic. Contentment dynamics fluctuated more than life standards and related to social factors, notably marriage and divorce.
