Assessment of a patient under intensive care shortly after surgery can be very difficult. The symptoms of ileus and peritonitis overlap, and can also be masked by the intensive care itself. Radiological findings (air-fluid levels) help in assessment of the patient's progress. The amount of gastric secretion via gastric tube is an important sign.
