This online book contains the proceedings of a meeting held at Michigan State University to celebrate the career and contributions of Horace A Smith. The meeting focused on the areas of astronomy which Horace worked on over the years and featured talks on RR Lyrae, Cepheids, and other variable stars. In addition to the direct links to the arXiv articles, I have included a link to download the entire book for free.
Long-term stellar variability in the Galactic Centre region
We report the detection of variable stars within a 11.5' x 11.5' region near the Galactic centre (GC) that includes the Arches and Quintuplet clusters, as revealed by the VISTA Variables in the Via
An Updated Census of RR~Lyrae Stars in the Globular Cluster $\omega$~Centauri (NGC\,5139)
[ABRIDGED] $\omega$ Centauri (NGC 5139) contains large numbers of variable stars of different types and, in particular, more than a hundred RR Lyrae stars. We have conducted a variability survey of
Pulsating stars in ω Centauri. Near-IR properties and period-luminosity relations
ω Centauri (NGC 5139) contains many variable stars of different types, including the pulsating type II Cepheids, RR Lyrae and SX Phoenicis stars. We carried out a deep, wide-field, near-infrared (IR)
An AO-assisted variability study of four globular clusters
The image subtraction technique applied to study variable stars in globular clusters represented a leap in the number of new detections, with the drawback that many of these new light curves could
Stellar variability at the main-sequence turnoff of the intermediate-age LMC cluster NGC 1846
Intermediate-age star clusters in the LMC present extended main sequence turnoffs (MSTO) that have been attributed to either multiple stellar populations or an effect of stellar rotation. Recently it
Stellar variability in the VVV survey: overview and first results
Abstract The Vista Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) ESO Public Survey is an ongoing time-series, near-infrared (IR) survey of the Galactic bulge and an adjacent portion of the inner disk, covering
Prediction of a red nova outburst in KIC 9832227
We present the first identification of a candidate precursor for an imminent red nova. Our prediction is based on the example of the precursor to the red nova V1309 Sco, which was retrospectively
