The cytotoxic lipid peroxidation product 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE) was infused into rat kidney. During the first 2 min a rapid degradation of a 100 microM HNE solution was demonstrated. After 5 min the consumption rate of 4-HNE reached a steady state of about 75 nmoles/ml. The total HNE consumption rate was about 200 nmoles/g w.w./min.
