We discuss the use of 3D printing to physically visualize (materialize) fluid flow structures. Such 3D models can serve as a refreshing hands-on means to gain deeper physical insights into the formation of complex coherent structures in fluid flows. In this short paper, we present a general procedure for taking 3D flow field data and producing a file format that can be supplied to a 3D printer, with two examples of 3D printed flow structures. A sample code to perform this process is also…

On the use of 3 D printing for scientific visualization June 15 th , 2018

We present the results of a case-based study in using 3D printing for applications in scientific visualization. The goal was to get insight into the practical sides of producing 3D prints from 3D

Innovations in 3D printing: a 3D overview from optics to organs

The potential for 3D printing to revolutionise manufacturing in the same way as the printing press revolutionised conventional printing is discussed; the production process is demonstrated by producing a set of eyeglass frames from 3D blueprints.

Fabricated: The New World of 3D Printing

Fabricated tells the story of 3D printers, humble manufacturing machines that are bursting out of the factory and into homes, businesses, schools, kitchens, hospitals, even the fashion catwalk. The

Global Linear Instability

This article reviews linear instability analysis of flows over or through complex two-dimensional (2D) and 3D geometries. In the three decades since it first appeared in the literature, global

Tomographic particle image velocimetry

This paper describes the principles of a novel 3D PIV system based on the illumination, recording and reconstruction of tracer particles within a 3D measurement volume. The technique makes use of

The immersed boundary method: A projection approach

Vortex dynamics around pitching plates

Vortex dynamics of wakes generated by rectangular aspect-ratio 2 and 4 and two-dimensional pitching flat plates in free stream are examined with direct numerical simulation and water tunnel

Modal Analysis of Fluid Flows: An Overview

The intent of this document is to provide an introduction to modal analysis that is accessible to the larger fluid dynamics community and presents a brief overview of several of the well-established techniques.

Stereoscopic particle image velocimetry

The principle of stereoscopic PIV, the different stereoscopic configurations that have been used, the relative error in the out-of-plane to the in-plane measurement, and the relative merits of calibration-based methods for reconstructing the three-dimensional displacement vector in comparison to geometric reconstruction are discussed.

Eddies, streams, and convergence zones in turbulent flows

Recent studies of turbulent shear flows have shown that many of their important kinematical and dynamical properties can be more clearly understood by describing the flows in terms of individual

On the Influence of Pitching and Acceleration on Vortex Dynamics Around Low-Aspect-Ratio Rectangular Wings

Abstract : In the present study, we use numerical simulations to investigate the three-dimensional flows over low-aspect-ratio at plates undergoing two canonical motions at low Reynolds numbers. The
