We have shown that progesterone (PROG) has a stimulatory effect on myelin formation after sciatic nerve injury. PROG is synthesized from pregnenolone (PREG) by the enzyme 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase isomerase (3beta-HSD). At the occasion of the 15th International Symposium of the Journal of the Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, we presented some of our recent results demonstrating, expression and activity of the enzyme 3beta-HSD in the rat sciatic nerve.
