Vascular remodelling occurs during all stages of atherosclerotic progression. Anti-atherosclerotic drugs may function by restoring regulation of the processes involved in remodelling of the extracellular matrix. A key group of enzymes involved in these processes are the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs).
