Modern transportation systems optimize traffic flows in road networks by allowing intersection-level traffic controllers to communicate and synchronize. Typically they are distributed systems, with multiple nodes (intersections) communicating with each other in real time. This paper proposes a design process for traffic coordination systems using model driven engineering (MDE), a paradigm used to design complex embedded systems in automotive and aerospace.
