We report the first single-channel subcarrier-based optical transmission of 1-Gb/s data over 1 km of standard 62.5-/spl mu/m-core graded-index multimode fiber. We employ a 2.5-GHz subcarrier modulated by binary phase-shift keying (BPSK). The BPSK-encoded subcarrier directly modulates a proton-implanted 850-nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser biased to 12 mA. Three different 1 km fiber links are demonstrated.
