This chapter gives an introduction to the class of polar oxides. Basic principles about symmetry classification, dielectric and ferroelectric polarization, phase transitions as well as electrical and piezoelectric properties are included. Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory and the soft mode concept for the phase transition from an unpolar to a polar phase are also topic of this chapter.
