Strings in $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric ${\rm U}(1)^N$ gauge theories with $N$ hypermultiplets are studied in the generic setting of an arbitrary Fayet-Iliopoulos triplet of parameters for each gauge group and an invertible charge matrix. Although the string tension is generically of a square-root form, it turns out that all existing BPS (Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield) solutions have a tension which is linear in the magnetic fluxes, which in turn are linearly related to the winding numbers…

We study a 1/4 Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield equation containing configurations made of walls, vortices, and monopoles in the Higgs phase, using the supersymmetric U(N{sub C}) gauge theories with

We review our recent work on solitons in the Higgs phase. We use U(NC) gauge theory with NF Higgs scalar fields in the fundamental representation, which can be extended to possess eight supercharges.
Cosmic (p,q,r) strings
The spectrum of (p, q) bound states of F- and D-strings has a distinctive square-root tension formula that is hoped to be a hallmark of fundamental cosmic strings. We point out that the BPS bound for
A practical model for cosmic (p,q) superstrings
We propose a model with a U(1)A ? U(1)B gauge symmetry which contains topological strings carrying magnetic flux under each of the U(1)s. By calculating the tension of the first few low energy

We show that D-branes, extended objects defined by mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions, break half the supersymmetries of the type II superstring and carry a complete set of electric and
Introduction to Cosmic F- and D-Strings
In these lectures I discuss the possibility that superstrings of cosmic length might exist and be observable. I first review the original idea of cosmic strings arising as gauge theory solitons, and

It is shown that the presence of global symmetries in a Lagrangian can lead to U(1) flux-tube solutions even when the vacuum manifold is simply connected, and it is explicitly proved that semilocal magnetic monopoles cannot exist.

The moduli space M(N,k) of k vortices in U(N) gauge theory with N Higgs fields in the fundamental representation is completely determined and Orbifold singularities of this space correspond to coincident vortsices and are resolved resulting in a smooth moduli manifold.
