涉华传记文献不是普通的中国题材英语文学作品,也不是汉语著述的英文翻译作品,它具有历史性和艺术性双重特征。这类作品的回译需要做到艺术性和科学性的统一。在《明代名人传》的回译过程中,对于书中大量的专有名词和引用,要追求译文与引语的复原和一致,讲究引语的权威性,即“翻译还原”;而对于没有源语参照的普通叙述性语句,要注重比较、分析和校勘,采取重构、转化等不同的翻译方法。
