This chapter examines how place and space, especially the neighborhoods and landmarks of Syracuse, NY, have shaped the ways these women understand themselves and who they are. We focus on the ways that the participants mentioned streets, schools, and bakeries, mostly of their childhood. Participants also discussed different neighborhoods as ethnic enclaves, distinguishing the Italian section, the North side, from the “other” white ethnics, mostly the Irish, on the west side.
