This paper reports on findings from an ongoing research project involving pre-service English teachers’ identity formation during teaching practicum at Riau University, Indonesia. It explores the motivations behind participants’ decisions to become English teachers. Qualitative data were gathered during preand post-teaching practicum periods utilising indepth one-on-one interviews of a small number of pre-service English teachers during placement in secondary schools in Indonesia.
